This page explains important limitations of the SmartReadings platform, including all features relating to meter readings, community water leak reports, water news, and dam level information.

SmartReadings (“we”, “us”, “the platform”) provides tools for South African households and communities to record, submit, and share water-related information. All features are provided for informational and community-reporting purposes only.
We do not verify, endorse, or guarantee the accuracy, completeness, timeliness, or reliability of any information, data, images, calculations, or outputs produced or displayed by the platform.
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable South African law, SmartReadings and its owners, operators, and service providers will not be liable for any direct or indirect losses, damages, costs, penalties, billing outcomes, service interruptions, or other consequences arising out of or related to your use of any part of the platform.
SmartReadings provides tools to capture, store, and forward water meter readings and related information (including images and extracted values). We do not verify or guarantee the accuracy of any readings, images, OCR results, calculations, or consumption figures.
You are responsible for checking all readings and information before submitting or relying on them, and for ensuring compliance with any municipal requirements or billing processes.
Submitted meter data (including meter details, readings, images, and metadata) may be shared with your selected recipients or municipalities and with third-party service providers as necessary to operate the platform.
The public leaks feature allows community members to submit reports of suspected water leaks, burst pipes, or related infrastructure issues. These reports are submitted by members of the public and are not verified, inspected, or confirmed by SmartReadings or any municipal authority.
A report appearing on SmartReadings does not constitute confirmation that a leak exists, that it has been assessed, or that any action has been or will be taken. Reports may be inaccurate, outdated, or duplicated.
For urgent water emergencies, contact your municipality directly. Do not rely solely on SmartReadings to report or track emergency situations.
SmartReadings is not liable for any consequences arising from reliance on community-submitted leak reports, including but not limited to: property damage, flooding, water loss, or failure to dispatch a repair.
By submitting a report, you confirm that the information is accurate to the best of your knowledge and you consent to it being displayed publicly on the platform.
The “Live SA Water Issues” feature aggregates news articles and reports from third-party sources (including Google News RSS feeds and other publicly available data) relating to water outages, infrastructure failures, and related topics in South Africa.
SmartReadings does not author, verify, or endorse any third-party content displayed in this section. Articles are sourced automatically and may be inaccurate, outdated, irrelevant, or duplicated. Headlines and summaries may not fully represent the original article.
SmartReadings is not responsible for the content of any linked external articles or websites. Use of this feature does not constitute professional advice of any kind.
Dam level information displayed on SmartReadings is sourced by automated scraping from the South African Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) website and other publicly available government data sources. This data is typically updated weekly by DWS.
SmartReadings does not guarantee the accuracy, currency, or completeness of dam level data. Data may be delayed, incomplete, or incorrectly parsed due to changes in source formatting or website availability.
Dam levels are provided for general awareness and educational purposes only. Do not rely on SmartReadings dam level data for operational, agricultural, engineering, insurance, or legal decisions. Always verify with the official DWS weekly report.
SmartReadings is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Department of Water and Sanitation or any South African government body.
Data sharing: By using SmartReadings, you consent to us processing and sharing submitted data (including meter details, readings, images, leak reports, and metadata) with your selected recipients/municipalities and with third-party service providers as necessary to operate, secure, and improve the platform (for example, email delivery, storage, and notifications).
Newsletter: If you subscribe to SmartReadings water updates, your email address and any area preference you provide will be stored and used solely to send relevant water-related information. You may unsubscribe at any time by contacting us.
We may update this disclaimer at any time. Continued use of the platform after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
